Department of Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is the medical speciality of balancing surgical anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine.

An anesthesiologist is actually a perioperative physician, where “peri” means all-around. So, an anesthesiologist is responsible for patient care throughout the surgical experience: before, during, and after the surgery itself. An anesthesiologist also has many responsibilities outside of the surgical suite (operating room).

An anesthesiologist is an essential and effective leader of the perioperative team, postoperative care, intensive care, trauma and pain services.

The different types of anaesthesia provided are:
  • General anaesthesia
  • Central neuraxial anaesthesia
  • Nerve plexus blocks
  • IV sedation
  • Monitored anaesthesia care
